ECM detected an erratic speed pulse count compared to transmission output shaft RPM and ABS wheel speed sensors.

Driver Symptoms

Speedometer erratic, bouncing, or dead at highway speeds
Cruise control, engine brake auto-engagement, and PTO disengaged automatically
Transmission gear shift hunting on automated manual transmissions (AMT)

Probable Causes

Excessive air gap or metal shavings on the transmission tailshaft magnetic speed sensor tip
Damaged or broken twisted-pair VSS harness wiring along frame rail
Mismatched tire revs-per-mile calibration parameter in ECM

Diagnostic Steps

Remove tailshaft magnetic pickup sensor; clean metal debris from tip and check AC voltage output (minimum 1.5V AC while turning driveshaft by hand)
Adjust sensor depth: screw in gently until contacting reluctor tone ring, then back out exactly 1/2 to 3/4 turn (0.040 in air gap)
Check transmission output speed vs ABS wheel speed in telematics live data
