SPN 84 FMI 14
Low to Moderate
System Overview: Drivetrain / VSS & Cruise Control
ECM detected an erratic speed pulse count compared to transmission output shaft RPM and ABS wheel speed sensors.
Driver Symptoms
- Speedometer erratic, bouncing, or dead at highway speeds
- Cruise control, engine brake auto-engagement, and PTO disengaged automatically
- Transmission gear shift hunting on automated manual transmissions (AMT)
Probable Causes
- Excessive air gap or metal shavings on the transmission tailshaft magnetic speed sensor tip
- Damaged or broken twisted-pair VSS harness wiring along frame rail
- Mismatched tire revs-per-mile calibration parameter in ECM
Diagnostic Steps
- Remove tailshaft magnetic pickup sensor; clean metal debris from tip and check AC voltage output (minimum 1.5V AC while turning driveshaft by hand)
- Adjust sensor depth: screw in gently until contacting reluctor tone ring, then back out exactly 1/2 to 3/4 turn (0.040 in air gap)
- Check transmission output speed vs ABS wheel speed in telematics live data
